Chinese Bridge Competition for College Students in Tanzania Successfully Rounds off

On May 5th, local time, the final round of the 18th Chinese Bridge Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students in Tanzania concluded at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM). The Competition was sponsored by the Confucius Institute Headquarters and the Chinese Embassy in Tanzania, and organized by the Confucius Institute at the UDSM.

Over 300 people including Mbamba, Director of the UDSM Business School, Mutembei, Foreign Director of the Confucius Institute at the UDSM, Gao Wei, Cultural Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Tanzania, Liu Yan, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at the UDSM, representatives of the Chinese funded enterprises in Tanzania, overseas Chinese, and teachers and students of the Confucius Institute attended the Competition.

Before the opening, Liu Yan in his speech, expressed his thanks to the guests and audience for their attendance and hoped they would enjoy the wonderful competition.

Mutembei indicated in his speech that with Chinese language as a bridge, the Chinese Bridge Competition connects China with Tanzania as well as the present with the future. He encouraged the students to persist in learning Chinese without fear of failure.

Mbamba, on behalf of the vice president of the UDSM Rutinwa, recognized in his speech the important role that the Confucius Institute plays in promoting China-Tanzania exchange, and highlighted the significance of language study. ¡°Learning more about Chinese language and having a deeper understanding of Chinese culture will equip you with more competitive edges!¡± He said.

Gao Wei remarked in his speech that at the time of the 55th anniversary of the establishment of China-Tanzania diplomatic ties, it was of great significance to hold the Chinese Bridge Competition for College Students in the new library of the UDSM, and he wished all the contestants in the competition good results.

The Competition consists of three sessions: keynote speech, talent show and Chinese knowledge quiz. Totally nine contestants from the Confucius Institute of the UDSM and the Confucius Institute at the University of Dodoma joined the fierce competition.

In the session of keynote speech, passionate contestants made speeches themed with ¡°The Flexible Chinese Characters¡±, ¡°The Wonderful Chinese Language¡±, ¡°My Story with Chinese Bridge¡± and ¡°Story About the Belt and Road Initiative¡±, etc. With standard and clear pronunciation, their performance drew rounds of applause.

The liveliest belonged to the session of talent show. The contestants took turn to show their talents by performing Chinese exclusive arts like martial arts, drama, cross talk and recitation. Li Yebu and Zi Long respectively performed ¡°The Lion Drum¡± and ¡°Chinese Kung Fu¡± in an energetic and powerful way; Dong Jie and Mai Ke presented soulfully songs like ¡°the girl waving her wings¡± and ¡°You Exist in My Song¡±; Gu Qiao introduced ¡°The Incredible Journey to China¡± in the form of cross talk; and He Ming, dressed in beautiful costume, performed the Peking Opera ¡°Ode to Pear Blossom¡±, stunning the audience the moment he opened his mouth.

In the session of Chinese knowledge quiz, which involved questions about Chinese language, China¡¯s national condition, Chinese culture and other contents, the contestants stayed calm and responded with confidence.

The Competition was really wonderful, creating climaxes one after another. After nearly three hours of intense competition, Gu Qiao and He Ming, both from the Confucius Institute of the UDSM, won the first prize and second prize respectively.

During the competition, the opening martial arts performances, including Tai Ji and sword, spear and cudgel play, brought by the students of the Confucius Institute at the UDSM aroused the enthusiasm of the audience. During the halftime performance, the Hanfu dance ¡°State of Ceremony¡± displayed the beauty of Chinese traditional clothing.
