On May 24th, Chinese and Belarusian educational institutions signed an agreement on establishing the Confucius Institute at Brest State A.S. Pushkin University, the fifth one in Belarus.

The agreement was jointly signed by the Confucius Institute Headquarters, Anhui University and Brest State A.S. Pushkin University. According to the agreement, this Confucius Institute will be established on the basis of the Center for Chinese Studies founded by Anhui University and Brest State A.S. Pushkin University. It will teach Chinese language to local students and adults of different age groups and promote Chinese language and culture.

Tian Xuejun, Vice Minister of Education of China, who was paying a visit to Belarus, attended the signing ceremony. He said in an interview that people-to-people bond between China and Belarus is the basis of the bilateral relations, and language plays an important role in promoting people-to-people bond. This Confucius Institute will make it more convenient for local students to learn Chinese and get to know more about China, thus strengthening the friendship between the two peoples. As Chinese learning gains more popularity in Belarus, China will continue to support Chinese language education in Belarus.

The first Confucius Institute in Belarus was established in 2006. By now, there are 4 Confucius Institutes and 2 independent Confucius Classrooms in Belarus, with more than 20,000 students. They have held various cultural activities, involving approximately 170,000 people in total, and have become an important platform for locals to learn Chinese and get to know more about China.
