First Confucius Institute in Dominican Republic Officially Inaugurates

A few days ago, the first Confucius Institute in the Dominican Republic officially inaugurated at Technological Institute of Santo Domingo (INTEC). At the unveiling ceremony, more than 60 people including Zhang Run, Chinese Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Jordi Portet, President of the Board of Regents of INTEC, Rolando M. Guzm¨¢n, Rector of INTEC, Chinese representatives of the Confucius Institute at INTEC, Chinese-funded companies, overseas Chinese, teachers and students of INTEC were present.

Chinese Ambassador Zhang Run extended warm congratulations on the establishment of the Confucius Institute at INTEC and highly appreciated the persistent efforts made by INTEC to promote educational and cultural exchanges between China and the Dominican Republic. He noted that the establishment of the Confucius Institute on the occasion of the first anniversary of China-Dominican Republic diplomatic relations is the crystal of bilateral cooperation between the two countries. Zhang Run introduced the origin and development status of the overseas Confucius Institutes to the guests, emphasizing that the Confucius Institute is an unofficial and non-profit educational organization, which carries out its work independently in accordance with laws of the host country and regulations of the host university where it is located. He pointed out that China and the Dominican Republic are good partners of like mind regardless of changes in the international landscape and inharmonious voices from some countries, and the mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries will move forward with firm and confident strides and the friendship between the two peoples will be passed on from generation to generation.

Rector Rolando M. Guzm¨¢n said in his speech that Confucius Institutes serve as an important bridge for Chinese and Dominican people to strengthen exchanges and cooperation in language, culture, academic research and other fields. He felt proud to have the first Confucius Institute of the Dominican Republic established at INTEC. He noted that the establishment of the Confucius Institute is an important achievement of the long-term cooperation between INTEC and the Chinese side, and also the starting point for higher level cooperation between the two sides. All the teachers and students of INTEC stand ready to make every effort to ensure the best performance of the Confucius Institute and continue to set a good example for cooperation with China to contribute to the sustained development of China-Dominican Republic relations.

Chinese Ambassador Zhang Run and Rector Rolando M. Guzm¨¢n together unveiled the plaque for the Confucius Institute at INTEC. Then, the chief guests from both sides cut the ribbon for the establishment of the Confucius Institute and visited the teaching and office area together. Students also presented a wonderful talent show of Chinese culture, bringing the atmosphere to a climax. Meanwhile, the Chinese Embassy in the Dominican Republic held a photo exhibition at INTEC marking the 40th anniversary of China¡¯s reform and opening-up.
